Chiang Mai, Thailand is a popular destination for retirees, offering a low cost of living, a tropical climate, and a rich cultural heritage. And now it's even better with a market specifically for retirees.

The retirement market in Chiang Mai has grown in recent years, with a large number of foreign retirees choosing to make the city their home.
An interesting weekend market for retirees is called Kasien Market, located in Old Chiang Mai (Chiang Mai's cultural centre). The word "Kasien" means "to retire". This market was the brainchild of Manasawat Chutima, who stated that the idea is to create an area specifically for retirees, which was initially called "60 Playground."
The idea behind this was to provide retirees with a space to do activities and learn new things, rather than just staying at home.
The weekend market is open Saturday and Sunday on the first and third week of the month from 8 am- 2 pm.
Manasawat noted that retirement does not mean giving up on interests and hobbies and that many retirees have the opportunity to follow their dreams and try new things, such as becoming travel influencers or learning how to bake.
The team's intention was to create an open space for retirees to pursue their hobbies, learn new skills, and eventually sell their products. Additionally, the goal was to create a space for retirees to socialize and make new friends of the same age. The concept was originally named "Space for the happiness of the old generation," but it was later expanded to be a space for people of all ages to come and experience happiness.
Why is Chiang Mai interesting for retirees?
The city offers a range of housing options, from budget-friendly apartments to upscale villas, and a variety of leisure and recreation activities, including outdoor markets, temples, museums, and local festivals. The cost of living in Chiang Mai is generally much lower than in Western countries, making it an attractive option for retirees who are looking to stretch their retirement savings.
The city also has a well-developed healthcare system, with a number of private hospitals and clinics offering high-quality medical services. Additionally, the city has a large ex-pat community, providing a supportive network for retirees.
In summary, Chiang Mai offers a thriving retirement market for those looking for a tropical destination with a rich cultural heritage, a low cost of living, and a supportive community.
